Girls’ volleyball is underway, and the Highland Park High School varsity team is dominating the courts with skill and determination. While every member plays an important role, leading the amazing team this season is sophomore captain Neda Savic. In only her second season on the HPHS varsity volleyball team, Savic has shown she has what it takes to be great, as she continues to impress. Her powerful presence on and off the court, combined with her drive and positive attitude, makes her a star member of the team.
Savic’s volleyball journey started almost eight years ago, but just last season, she was named an All-Conference player. Even more recently, she earned All-Tournament, though these are just a few of many awards she has acquired over her volleyball career.
“For me as a sophomore, one of my biggest accomplishments was being nominated for captain,” Savic says, “It gives me a big role on the court, not just as a player, but also as a leader and teammate”.
Savic doesn’t just lead through her incredible performance, but also brings her teammates together. She values the relationship she has built with the team just as much as her performance on the court.
“Being on the HPHS volleyball team has changed me in so many positive ways,” she states. “It pushes me to work hard, stay focused, and always be there for my teammates.”
Savic brings more to the table than just her athleticism and skill; she is a friend to all and wants her team to succeed as one. Playing a sport at HPHS is not just about the athletic aspect; it’s about becoming part of something bigger than yourself, uniting in a community that bonds over their shared love for an activity, and Savic has learned that.
Like many students-athletes can attest, Savic faces the challenges of balancing both academics and the high-level demands of volleyball. Focusing on school while playing a varsity sport is a difficult task, but Savic makes it look easy. It’s especially hard as students start to grow and mature in their academics, but Savic always remains focused on her goals and stays consistent.
“Keeping a positive mentality can be a struggle at times, especially when things get tough,” she admits, “being a student-athlete means juggling school and volleyball, which can definitely be challenging, but I try to stay consistent with my goals and mindset”.
Whether she is spiking the ball on the court or helping a teammate through practice, Savic has shown she is a very important asset to the team. Her passion, determination, and leadership make her stand out not just on the court, but also in the Highland Park community as a whole. As the season continues, all eyes will be on Savic and the volleyball team, cheering them on and watching them continue to thrive and flourish.
