Ever feel like the school day is packed with assignments, tests, and stress? A good book can be the perfect escape from the chaos of high school life. That’s exactly why Book Club is the perfect place to dive into stories and share ideas! On Wednesdays at 7:45 inside the library’s Makerspace, members will have the opportunity to read a book of their choosing over the span of a month and meet in person to discuss the book’s content.
Interested in a specific genre? Do not despair! Book club reads all genres, including mystery, activism, fantasy, science fiction, and much more. Members have enjoyed titles like “The Inheritance Games” by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, “Truly Devious” by Maureen Johnson, and “Red, White & Royal Blue” by Casey McQuiston. Whether it’s something you loved about a character, a theme you thought stood out, or something you didn’t enjoy at all, there are multiple opportunities to share your thoughts. It’s important to keep in mind that these exchanges extend beyond the pages of a novel, connecting to real-world experiences, current events, or other works of media/art.
When Mrs. Meyer came to HPHS, she was surprised to learn that our expansive list of clubs did not contain a book club. “I wanted students to have a space to come together, share ideas, and celebrate a love of reading,” Meyers said. Fast forward 9 years, the Book Club legacy has remained strong, and according to Meyers, is essential in “[building] community, [sparking] authentic conversation, and [helping] students connect with others who share a love of reading without the pressure of being right or wrong.”
Book Club is definitely a low-commitment, easy club to fit into any schedule, making it both welcoming and flexible for all. If interested, do not hesitate to email Mrs. Meyer at [email protected] or stop by the library to pick up this month’s book! Don’t miss out on the fun, come be a part of the Book Club!
